How to Choose a Tail Lift: Capacity, Platform and Power

Updated 2026-10-28 · Aurex trade counter, Campbellfield VIC

Short answer: choose capacity from the heaviest single load you lift, including the pallet jack. 1.5T aluminium suits vans and light rigids, 2T aluminium suits most rigid trucks and tray bodies, and 3T steel suits heavy rigids and heavy pallet work. Then confirm platform size, voltage and mounting with your chassis details before you order.

Capacity: 1.5T, 2T or 3T?

3 tonneSteelHeavy rigids, fleet bodies and heavy pallet work

Size for the heaviest load you'll put on the platform, not the average one. Include the weight of the pallet jack or trolley and the person operating it.

What the load centre means

A tail lift's rated capacity applies with the load's centre of gravity at a stated distance from the body, called the load centre. A load placed further out on the platform increases the strain on the lift. Check the load centre in the specification and keep heavy loads close to the body.

Platform size

Our lifts have 2450mm-wide platforms in depths of 2200, 2400 or 2600mm, depending on the model. A deeper platform takes more pallets or roll cages per lift but needs the rear overhang and body to suit.

Power

Our tail lifts run on 24V electro-hydraulic power units. The lift must match the truck's electrical system, so confirm your voltage before ordering. A 12V 2.2kW power unit is also listed for tail lift systems.

What to send for an accurate quote

  • Rear overhang and bed (floor) height, measured unladen
  • The heaviest load you lift and how it's moved (pallet jack, trolley, roll cage)
  • Electrical system voltage (12V or 24V)
